About Mega Millions
Mega Millions is the second of the two big American multi-state lotteries, played in 45 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Like Powerball it pools ticket sales from all participating lotteries into one jackpot, so the top prize regularly climbs into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

How to play
Since the April 2025 rule change a Mega Millions play costs $5 and every ticket includes a random multiplier. You pick five numbers from 1 to 70 and one Mega Ball from 1 to 24, or take a Quick Pick.
The multiplier — 2×, 3×, 4×, 5× or 10× — is assigned when the ticket is printed and applies to every prize below the jackpot, so a winning ticket is worth at least twice the base prize. The separate Megaplier add-on that existed before 2025 is no longer sold.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 290,472,336: 5 numbers from 1–70 plus one from 1–24.
Prizes and jackpot
There are nine prize tiers, from matching the Mega Ball alone up to the jackpot for five numbers plus the Mega Ball. Under the 2025 rules the smallest prize is $10 and the jackpot starts at $50 million after it is won.
The jackpot is advertised as a 30-year annuity; winners can instead take the cash value, which is lower. Jackpots roll over until someone matches all six numbers.
History
The game launched in 1996 as The Big Game with six states and was renamed Mega Millions in 2002. The number ranges have been adjusted several times, most recently in April 2025 when the Mega Ball pool shrank from 25 to 24 and the ticket price rose to $5.
The record Mega Millions jackpot is $1.602 billion, won by one ticket in Florida on 8 August 2023.
