About Powerball

Powerball is the largest multi-state lottery in the United States. It is coordinated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) and sold in 45 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each participating lottery runs its own sales and pays its own winners; the jackpot pool is shared across all of them, which is why it grows so quickly.

The numbers on this page come from the official published results and are checked against the operator after every draw. LuckyNumberz does not sell tickets and has no connection with MUSL or any state lottery.

How to play

A play costs $2. You choose five numbers from 1 to 69 (the white balls) and one number from 1 to 26 (the red Powerball). You can pick the numbers yourself or ask for a Quick Pick, where the terminal chooses them at random.

For an extra $1 per play you can add Power Play, which multiplies any prize below the jackpot by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 (the 10× multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less). The Match 5 prize with Power Play is always doubled to $2 million. Some states also offer Double Play, a second drawing with its own prize pool.

Sales close shortly before the draw; the exact cut-off time varies by state, usually one to two hours before 10:59 pm Eastern Time.

Odds

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338: 5 numbers from 1–69 plus one from 1–26.

Prizes and jackpot

There are nine ways to win. Matching only the Powerball pays $4; matching all five white balls pays $1 million; matching five white balls plus the Powerball wins the jackpot. The jackpot is paid either as an annuity over 30 years or as a smaller lump-sum cash value — the amount shown on this page is the advertised annuity figure.

When nobody hits the jackpot it rolls over to the next draw. After a jackpot is won, it resets to a guaranteed starting amount and grows again with sales.

History

Powerball began in April 1992 as the successor to Lotto*America. Its matrix has changed several times; the current 5/69 + 1/26 format dates from October 2015, and a Monday draw was added in August 2021, making three draws a week.

The largest Powerball jackpot to date was $2.04 billion, won by a single ticket sold in California in the draw of 7 November 2022. It remains the largest lottery prize ever awarded anywhere in the world.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the Powerball drawing?

Draws take place on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 pm Eastern Time in Tallahassee, Florida. Results are published within minutes and appear on this page as soon as the official source releases them.

What are the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot?

The odds of matching all five white balls and the Powerball are 1 in 292,201,338. The overall odds of winning any prize are about 1 in 24.9.

Do the white balls have to be in order?

No. Only the set of numbers matters; the order in which they are drawn or printed on your ticket makes no difference.

How long do I have to claim a prize?

It depends on the state where the ticket was bought — typically between 90 days and one year from the draw date. Check your own lottery’s rules.

Does LuckyNumberz sell Powerball tickets?

No. We only show official results and check your saved numbers against them. Tickets are sold by the state lotteries and their authorised retailers.
