About Lotto 6/49
Lotto 6/49 is Canada’s original national lottery, drawn every Wednesday and Saturday since 1982. Like Lotto Max it is run by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation and sold by the five regional lotteries — OLG, BCLC, the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, Loto-Québec and Atlantic Lottery — with the same winning numbers and the same prize structure across the country.
This page shows the six winning numbers and the bonus number for every draw, the prize breakdown and the amounts on offer for the next draw, as published by the regional lotteries. LuckyNumberz does not sell tickets and has no connection with the ILC or any of its member lotteries.
How to play
A play costs $3 and gives you one set of six numbers from 1 to 49, chosen by you or as a Quick Pick, plus a separate number printed on the ticket for the Gold Ball Draw. A seventh ball, the bonus number, is drawn from the same set of 49 and is used in two of the prize categories.
Tickets are sold in retail outlets and online by the regional lottery in each province and territory, and add-on games such as Encore or Extra can be added to the same ticket. Sales close on Wednesday and Saturday nights ahead of the 10:30 pm Eastern Time draw.
Odds
The odds of winning the Lotto 6/49 jackpot are 1 in 13,983,816: 6 numbers from 1–49.
Prizes and jackpot
The main draw has seven prize categories. Two numbers wins a free play and two numbers plus the bonus pays a small fixed prize; three, four and five numbers pay increasing amounts; five numbers plus the bonus is the second prize; and six numbers wins the Classic Jackpot, a fixed $5 million that is shared if more than one ticket matches.
Since September 2022 every ticket also enters the Gold Ball Draw. One ticket number is selected each draw and wins either a $1 million prize, when a white ball is drawn, or the Gold Ball jackpot, which starts at $10 million and grows by $1 million each draw until the gold ball comes out. That is why two separate amounts appear alongside Lotto 6/49 results.
History
Lotto 6/49 launched in June 1982 and was the first Canadian lottery in which players chose their own numbers. The ticket price rose to $2 in 2004 and to $3 in 2013, when a separate $1 million prize draw was attached to every ticket; the September 2022 redesign replaced that with the fixed Classic Jackpot and the Gold Ball Draw.
The largest Lotto 6/49 jackpot was $64 million, won by a single ticket in Ontario in October 2015, under the earlier rules in which the main jackpot rolled over without a fixed amount.
Frequently asked questions
When is Lotto 6/49 drawn?
Wednesday and Saturday at 10:30 pm Eastern Time. The regional lotteries publish the numbers shortly afterwards.
What are the odds of matching six numbers?
Six numbers from 49: 1 in 13,983,816 per play.
What is the Gold Ball Draw?
A second draw based on the ticket number rather than your six numbers. One ticket is selected each draw; it wins $1 million if a white ball is drawn and the Gold Ball jackpot if the gold ball is drawn. The Gold Ball jackpot starts at $10 million and rises by $1 million each draw until it is won.
What is the bonus number?
A seventh ball drawn from the same 49 after the six winning numbers. It is not needed for the Classic Jackpot and counts only in the five-plus-bonus and two-plus-bonus categories.
How long do I have to claim a prize?
Generally one year from the draw date, though each regional lottery sets its own rules. Check the lottery that sold the ticket.
