About Lotto (New Zealand)
Lotto is New Zealand’s national lottery, run by Lotto NZ, the Crown entity that operates the country’s lottery games. Six numbers are drawn from a pool of 40, followed by a seventh ball from the same machine, the Bonus Ball. It is drawn on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, and the same ticket can also be entered in the add-on games Powerball and Strike.
This page shows the six winning numbers and the Bonus Ball for each Lotto draw, taken from Lotto NZ’s official results service, together with the prize per winner in each division. LuckyNumberz does not sell tickets and has no connection with Lotto NZ.
How to play
Choose six numbers from 1 to 40 for each line, or take a Dip and let the system pick them. Draws are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 20:00 New Zealand time, and sales for each draw close shortly before it starts.
Tickets are sold by Lotto NZ retailers throughout New Zealand and through the operator’s official website and app. For an extra amount per line you can add Powerball, which draws one further number from a separate pool and attaches a rolling jackpot to your Lotto lines, and Strike, a separate game about matching the first four Lotto numbers in the order they are drawn. This page shows the Lotto numbers only; Powerball and Strike results are not included.
Odds
The odds of winning the Lotto (New Zealand) jackpot are 1 in 3,838,380: 6 numbers from 1–40.
Prizes and jackpot
There are seven prize divisions. Division 1 is for all six numbers; the Bonus Ball creates the divisions for five numbers plus the Bonus Ball, four plus the Bonus Ball and three plus the Bonus Ball, and the remaining divisions reward five, four and three numbers on their own. The lowest divisions pay modest amounts; the operator publishes the prize per winner for every division after each draw.
Lotto’s Division 1 prize is a fixed NZ$1,000,000 pool that is shared when there is more than one winner; it does not roll over. The large rolling jackpot that New Zealanders talk about belongs to Powerball, the separate add-on game, and is not shown on this page. The amounts in the lower divisions vary with sales and the number of winners.
History
The first New Zealand Lotto draw was held on 1 August 1987 and the game has been drawn every week since. Strike and Powerball were later introduced as optional add-ons, Powerball bringing the rolling jackpot that now dominates the game’s headlines. The Wednesday draw was added alongside the original Saturday draw, giving the game its current two draws a week.
Frequently asked questions
When is New Zealand Lotto drawn?
On Wednesdays and Saturdays at 20:00 New Zealand time. The results are published on the operator’s site shortly afterwards.
What are the odds of winning Lotto Division 1?
Matching six numbers from 40 has odds of 1 in 3,838,380 per line. The Bonus Ball is not needed for Division 1.
Why is there no growing jackpot on this page?
Because Lotto’s top prize is a fixed NZ$1,000,000 pool. The jackpot that rolls over belongs to Powerball, a separate add-on game that this page does not cover.
What does the Bonus Ball do?
It is the seventh ball drawn from the same machine. If you have matched five, four or three of the six main numbers and also hold the Bonus Ball, you win in a higher division.
