About Powerball (Australia)

Powerball is Australia’s biggest jackpot lottery, drawn every Thursday evening. Seven numbers come from a barrel of 35 and the Powerball from a separate barrel of 20, and the Division 1 prize rolls over from week to week until it is won — which is how Powerball has produced the largest lottery prizes ever offered in Australia. It is sold through the Lott in most states and Lotterywest in Western Australia, and it shares only its name with the American game of the same name.

This page shows the seven main numbers and the Powerball for each draw, the division prizes and the advertised Division 1 amount for the next Thursday. LuckyNumberz does not sell tickets and has no connection with the Lott or Lotterywest.

How to play

For each game, pick seven numbers from 1 to 35 and one Powerball from 1 to 20, or let a QuickPick choose them. System entries cover more than seven main numbers in one game. PowerHit entries include every one of the 20 Powerballs together with your seven main numbers, so the Powerball is always matched and only the main numbers are left to chance; they cost more accordingly. Prices per game are set by each state lottery.

Tickets are sold in lottery outlets and through the operators’ websites and apps, and the same numbers can be entered for several weeks in a row. Sales close on Thursday evening ahead of the draw at around 8:00 pm Sydney time.

Odds

The odds of winning the Powerball (Australia) jackpot are 1 in 134,490,400: 7 numbers from 1–35 plus one from 1–20.

Prizes and jackpot

There are nine divisions. Division 1 is seven numbers plus the Powerball; Division 2 is seven numbers; Division 3 is six plus the Powerball; Division 4 is six; Division 5 is five plus the Powerball; Division 6 is four plus the Powerball; Division 7 is five; Division 8 is three plus the Powerball; Division 9 is two plus the Powerball. Because the Powerball comes from a separate barrel, two main numbers with the Powerball is enough for the lowest prize.

Division 1 is pooled and shared among any winners; when there is no winner it jackpots to the next Thursday, and the operator advertises the estimated amount ahead of each draw, which is what this page shows as the next jackpot. The lower divisions are paid from fixed shares of the prize fund and vary with sales and the number of winners.

History

Powerball began in May 1996 with five numbers from 45 and a Powerball from 45. The format has been changed twice to let prizes grow larger: in March 2013 to six numbers from 40 with a Powerball from 20, and in April 2018 to the current seven numbers from 35 plus a Powerball from 20.

Frequently asked questions

When is Powerball drawn in Australia?

Every Thursday at around 8:00 pm Sydney time. The operator publishes the numbers shortly afterwards.

What are the odds of winning Division 1?

Seven numbers from 35 plus a Powerball from 20: 1 in 134,490,400 for a single game. The lowest division, two numbers plus the Powerball, has odds of about 1 in 65 per game.

Is this the same as the American Powerball?

No. They share a name and the idea of a separately drawn Powerball, but the Australian game has its own matrix, its own operator and its own prizes.

What is a PowerHit entry?

An entry that plays your seven main numbers with all 20 Powerballs at once, so the Powerball is always matched. It costs the equivalent of 20 games.

What are the supplementary numbers in this game?

There are none. Powerball uses seven main numbers and one Powerball; the supplementary numbers belong to Saturday Lotto, Oz Lotto, Set for Life and Weekday Windfall.
