About PowerBall (South Africa)
PowerBall is South Africa’s biggest-jackpot lottery, operated by Ithuba, the licensed operator of the South African National Lottery. Five numbers are drawn from a pool of 50 and a separate machine then produces the PowerBall, a number from 1 to 20. Draws take place twice a week and the top prize regularly reaches tens of millions of rand.
This page shows the five main numbers and the PowerBall for every draw, together with the jackpot the operator announces for the next one. LuckyNumberz does not sell tickets and has no connection with Ithuba or the National Lottery.
How to play
Choose five numbers from 1 to 50 and one PowerBall from 1 to 20. You can select the numbers yourself or ask for a Quick Pick. Draws are held on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 21:00 South African time, and sales for a draw close shortly beforehand.
Tickets are sold by National Lottery retailers across South Africa, through participating banks and through the operator’s official website and app. For a small extra amount per board you can add PowerBall Plus, a second draw held straight after the main one that uses the same numbers and has its own prize pool. The results shown on this page are for the main PowerBall draw only.
Odds
The odds of winning the PowerBall (South Africa) jackpot are 1 in 42,375,200: 5 numbers from 1–50 plus one from 1–20.
Prizes and jackpot
There are nine prize divisions. The lowest is for matching the PowerBall alone; the top division requires all five numbers and the PowerBall. Because the PowerBall comes from its own drum, matching five numbers without it is the second division rather than the jackpot. Prizes in the upper divisions are pari-mutuel and depend on sales and the number of winners, while the lower divisions pay fixed amounts.
When nobody wins the top division the jackpot rolls over to the next draw and continues to grow. The operator publishes the estimated jackpot before each draw, and that figure appears on this page.
History
PowerBall was introduced to South Africa in 2009 as a higher-jackpot companion to the older Lotto game. The matrix was widened in 2015 to the current five numbers from 50 plus a PowerBall from 20, which lengthened the odds and led to larger rollovers. PowerBall Plus was added as an optional second draw, and the two games have produced most of the country’s record lottery prizes.
Frequently asked questions
When is PowerBall drawn?
On Tuesdays and Fridays at 21:00 South African Standard Time. The numbers are published shortly after the draw.
What are the odds of winning the PowerBall jackpot?
Five numbers from 50 give 2,118,760 combinations, and the PowerBall from 1 to 20 multiplies that by twenty: 1 in 42,375,200.
What is PowerBall Plus?
An optional second draw held immediately after the main draw. Your ticket uses the same numbers, but the winning numbers and the prize pool are separate. This page shows the main draw.
Can I win by matching only the PowerBall?
Yes. Matching the PowerBall alone is the lowest prize division.
